The Core and Other Book Graphics

This graphic guides each part of the book, keeping relationships at the center. The first blue circle describes “the core” of innovative teaching and learning. The second circle depicts each of the eight characteristics that are part of an innovator’s mindset. The final outer circle reminds us how to apply each of the ideas in this graphic.

Education Decision-Making Flowchart

We are not saying that every day is going to be easy, what we are saying is that we can figure out ways to feel a sense of purpose and feel less stuck! That is what the Education Decision-Making Flowchart was created to remind us about! In a blog post, 3 Questions to Help Leverage Barriers in Education, I shared that this image is not about defining a pathway for you, but it is about determining your own pathway. These questions can help us get back to our focus on the learners and doing what is truly best for them. When things are not easy, which in education, they often aren’t, we can do three things to help us move forward in doing what is best for our learners:

  • Identify the Barriers – what is standing in our way
  • Find Solutions – what do we need to get over this barrier
  • Make it Happen – go forward and remember to take time to reflect

Expert Learning Graphic

To help support our learners, we can give them opportunities to set their own goals, chances to persevere and authentic learning experiences. Instead of just focusing on acquiring new knowledge, we can give our students time to develop the characteristics of the innovator’s mindset by providing them with expert learning opportunities. Katie Novak shares these ideas in her youtube video titled Katie Novak on Making Expert Learners. The visuals found here reflect those ideas and share what it means to provide those expert learning opportunities.

  • Equity – everyone in the final image has access to the supports they need
  • Engagement – everyone is focused on and interested in their task
  • Involvement – everyone is actively involved in the learning experience

Innovate Inside the Box does not address every single barrier in education, we are not saying that it does or expecting that it would! Instead, Innovate Inside the Box does lay a foundation for building strong relationships, committing to learning and gives examples of how to develop and use an innovator’s mindset with your learners.
